This image could just as easily have been called “Simplicity Writ Large.” I’m a minimalist when it comes to design and architecture and this pier plays right to that. I love shooting piers, especially ones that are not particularly — from a design standpoint — busy and distracting. To highlight the clean lines and symmetry of the pier I made sure that the waves and sky complemented it, which is why I went with this long exposure. The 88-second exposure allowed me to give the waves a dreamy look and the clouds a “reaching out” kind of quality.
