Blue Hawaii

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai’s west side is drier, more brown, and warmer. What’s more, it’s often bereft of clouds. Imagine my fortune, then, when I had a huge cloud bank to the right of the pier while the left side remained, for the most part, cloudless. The contrast was too much for me to pass up. Rather than shoot from the top of the pier, I decided that the underside of the pier would provide the perfect spot to capture this image. It’s really a tale of two skies and two oceans. The sky on the left, which was a deep blue, allowed me to capture a deep blue ocean on the left and it provided blue reflections under the pier. The right, where the clouds were, gave me a more misty and mysterious look to work with. This is a 46-second exposure.
